In tourist brochures, it is often recommended that the tourist learn a few words of the native tongue ?
Can you answer cakes4africa's question about brochures?:
Of the country they intend to visit. Should a tourist visiting SA be able to speak a few words of each of the eleven official languages in South Africa ? Which words would you recommend they learn ?

I guess in South Africa, you will get by easily anywhere in the country if you can speak english cos although there are 11 languages, the majority do know English.
No they should not but surely a big majority speak some english Us australians do not learn the 200 different languages of Aboriginal as most have knowledge of English also . But if you where going to a country that spoke French or japanese it would be helpful to know one or 2 phrases such as Goodmorning good evening i need help . please and thankyou and possibly take a dictionary that interprets your language and theirs
Do me a favour Cakes. An hour in front of these Rap Artists on MTV will be enough to learn all the way of talking to Africans that they need.
Please don't shoot me - in Xhosa.
